Gestalt Film 1 (M-A-GF1)

GREEN, A.

Location In Research

The first of my 'Gestalt Films'. With this one I was experimenting firstly with the depth of detail removal and distortion I could achive before the subject became unintelligible. Secondly, when the constituant clips were compiled into this film, with the level to which meaning could be carried to unintelligible clips from earlier comprehensible ones.

In order to create these films I take a short sequence of fairly mundane footage which I have shot with either a webcam or a Fuji s5600 stills camera. I firstly use a free movie edit program, virtualdub, to convert the clips to duotone back and white. These I take into macromedia flash either manually as a stills sequence which is then converted one frame at a time to vector images, or automatically with a vector SWF import tool. This creates a very harshly defined extreme black and white duotone film. These clips are then re-rendered out to a digital video format which is then compiled, along with other clips into a finished movie.

This is a shorthand account, often other editing stages have taken place as well.
